Humans are ends in themselves

What does it mean to reach that end?  For a person to achieve happiness?  Contentment?  Fulfillment?

I like the term self-actualization - it seems vague, but positive.  Each person can decide what they ultimately want out of life - spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and materially.

My husband pointed out that this is not what Kant intended by this statement. (I didn't even know the statement came from Kant). He meant that one human can not use another human as a sacrifice to achieve their own ends. I had thought it meant that the ultimate goal in life is to help others achieve happiness.
