The best holidays are the antinomian ones, where everyone's facade falls away, and they are free-spirited and revelrous. Holi seems like the only time of year where a person will grab you from behind and throw colored powder in your face. Halloween seems like the only time of year where you can dress absolutely any way you want. And Dia de los Muertos seems like the only time of year when one can have such an irreverent and exuberant attitude towards death.

Antinomian holidays are a lot of fun, but some are insanely wild, like Mardi Gras in the Francophone and former Francophone world, which is the same as Carnival (the last day is on Mardi Gras, at least) in culturally Iberian countries.
It is also interesting to me that the supposed religious connotations of holidays like Dia de Los Muertos/All Saints Day/Samhein, Holi, and Mardi Gras/Carnival seem to not even cross the minds of those who celebrate them most of the time.
Totally agree with Evan. The celebrations have evolved so much that only a few people seem to follow the religous traditions of some of the holidays. I sometimes even feel like Christmas also unfortunately falls under this category.
But, I like your point about how people can express and free themselves in celebrations like these. :) Halloween and Carnivals are great examples.
